There are four states of matter in physics: solid, liquid, gas and plasma. The CAD model can actually be the fifth state of matter. Matter is defines as �something that occupies space and can be perceived by one or more senses; a physical body, a physical substance, or the universe as a whole�. CAD models occupy virtual space, have virtual mass, virtual density and are virtual bodies.

 

The intention of a good CAD model is to telegraph the design intent in 3D form of the design in virtual space. An accurate 3D model can be used to communicate the design to engineering and manufacturing. It is a virtual model in every sense of the word.

 

The purpose of the physical model is to communicate the design intent in the physical world. An accurate model looks so close to the production parts it is difficult to tell the difference between the model and the production parts. The model of this triathlon watch looks very close to the production. Just about the only way to tell the difference is the model does not �tick�.
